Build It.” At ConstructHUBS, we join the celebration with the ideas of five world-renowned architects who turned that principle into built work.

A theme for a global problem

The International Union of Architects (UIA) created World Architecture Day in 1985. It is celebrated on the first Monday of October, the same day as the United Nations’ World Habitat Day.

For 2026, the UN chose the theme “Adequate housing for all.” Within that framework, the UIA adopted the slogan Housing is a Human Right. Build It. and called on architects around the world to promote equitable access to housing through design, research, and public advocacy.

The starting point is clear: millions of people still lack access to safe, adequate, and affordable housing. That affects their health, their dignity, and their opportunities. In Panama, Central America, and the Caribbean, the housing deficit is part of the industry’s everyday conversation.

The five names that follow have something in common: all of them received the Pritzker Prize, considered the Nobel of architecture, and all of them showed that decent housing is not a minor topic for the profession’s greats.

1. Alejandro Aravena (Chile, 2016 Pritzker Prize)

In Aravena’s view, social housing calls for professional quality, not professional charity.

Aravena describes social housing as one of the hardest questions in architecture. That is why, he argues, it demands the best talent rather than charity work.

With his firm ELEMENTAL, he developed incremental housing: homes delivered with a finished base and space set aside so each family can expand when its finances allow. The firm has designed more than 2,500 low-cost social housing units. He was the first Chilean and the fourth Latin American to win the Pritzker.

2. Balkrishna Doshi (India, 2018 Pritzker Prize)

For Doshi, the goal was never to build houses, but homes where a happy community lives.

Doshi, a student of Le Corbusier, became known for Aranya, a low-cost housing development in Indore for some 80,000 people. Instead of delivering finished units, the project gave each family a plot with a built core so they could complete their own homes.

Aranya won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995. When he received the Pritzker, Doshi called on the profession to take a more collaborative approach, committed to the dignity of the people who live in the housing.

3. Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal (France, 2021 Pritzker Prize)

Their guiding principle: never demolish, never remove or replace; always add, transform, and reuse.

This is the principle with which the French duo renovated social housing blocks that the government had planned to tear down. At the Grand Parc complex in Bordeaux, they transformed 530 apartments by adding balconies and winter gardens, without displacing the residents.

In Mulhouse, they built 59 social housing units of 60 m² (650 sq ft) instead of the usual 25 m² (270 sq ft), for the same construction and rental cost. Their message for the region is powerful: improving what already exists is also a way to build decent housing.

4. Shigeru Ban (Japan, 2014 Pritzker Prize)

Ban has acknowledged that architects almost always work for the privileged, for people with power and money.

With that self-criticism, Ban explained why he devoted part of his career to people who had lost everything. Since the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the 1995 Kobe earthquake, he has designed shelters and temporary housing using recycled cardboard tubes, shipping containers, and local materials.

In 1995, he founded the Voluntary Architects’ Network (VAN), which works in disaster zones. For countries exposed to earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods, his work is a reminder that emergencies deserve design too.

5. He was the first Black architect to receive the Pritzker. His work, built with local materials and community labor, shows that scarcity is no excuse for bad architecture.

For him, being poor is no reason to give up on quality. It may be the best summary of this year’s theme.

The architects’ ideas are paraphrased by ConstructHUBS from their published statements; see the sources at the end.

What they leave us for the region

Five countries, five contexts, and one conclusion: decent housing is solved with good design, not second-rate solutions.

Think over time. Aravena and Doshi designed homes that grow with families.

Transform before you demolish. Lacaton and Vassal showed that renovation can deliver more space for the same cost.

Design for emergencies too. Ban took architecture where it is needed most.

Demand quality for everyone. Kéré reminds us that comfort is not a privilege.

In Panama, Central America, and the Caribbean, the construction industry holds part of the answer.
